Brothers Strugatsky

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_and_Arkady_Strugatsky
Ever since my father brought home the first Strugatsky book , "Monday Begins on Saturday", I have been a huge fan of all of their works and have read every single one of them many times, memorizing favorite parts and finding new interesting things that i may have missed before. What really bothers me is that not a single screen adoptation of any of their works does them justice. The most famous movie, Stalker done by a famous Russian movie director Andrey Tarkovsky hardly reflects the dynamics of "Piknik" and its heroes' personalities. Same goes for most other movies based on their work. Fast, interesting, exciting books are made into slow, boring movies that fans see only to be disappointed. The problem is not that the fans don't get exactly the same story on the screen as is in the book, thats what directors, screen writers, actors creativity is for, the problem is that for the general masses that will never pick up on of Strugatsky or Asimov, or any good writer books, their opinion of the original writers will be based on the movie and the original work will be lost through Hollywood's or its foreign counterpart's crappy job.

Russian Ingenuity

It has long been a Russian proverb that "The Poor are rich in imagination", however this is a new one:
"A villager from Russia’s Far Eastern Primorye region has been arrested for illegally producing drugs with an apparatus he had created of a milking machine, a blowtorch, an electric drill and a spin dryer, the RIA Novosti news agency reported on Friday.

Federal Directorate for Drug Control spokesman said the man had fitted out a mini-factory for making hashish oil, and even hit upon the idea to place it in a neighboring village, near his relatives’ house.

Police seized 20 liters of pot ready for processing and 22.6 kilos of dried hemp from the drug producer."
